Royal Blackburn Welcome Letter

Welcome to the Children’s Unit at Royal Blackburn Hospital, The Children’s Unit at Royal Blackburn Hospital (RBH) consists of a 50 bedded in-patient ward, a 4 bedded High Dependency Unit and a 9 bedded Children’s Observation and Assessment Unit. The Paediatric Department is staffed by experienced Children’s nurses and doctors. Many of them have worked at the Children’s Hospital in Manchester or other large Children’s Hospitals in the UK and abroad. The Children’s Unit at Royal Blackburn Hospital offers a shared care facility to the children undergoing oncology treatment – this will have already been explained to you by the doctors and nurses on ward 84 at RMCH. The Blackburn service is also offered to children and families with other conditions who are from Blackburn but their main treatment centre is RMCH.

Visiting
Both parents and carers are welcome to stay with their child at all times to support their child and each other. For further support, an additional two visitors at one time, including siblings, are welcome between 10am and 8pm.

Travel Information

By Car
From the M65 Leave the M65 at Junction 5 (Shadsworth/Haslingden) onto the A6077, Haslingden Road heading towards Blackburn, go straight across the next four roundabouts and at the fifth roundabout turn right into the main hospital entrance. Parking is available on site and is free for Blue Badge holders.

Free Inter-Hospital Shuttle bus between Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital. The Trust has made a commitment to provide free transport services between Burnley General Teaching Hospital and the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital for patients and visitors. The service runs from 6.15am to 9.30pm (last bus) Monday to Friday. A reduced service operates on weekends and Bank Holidays.

Ward Facilities

Children’s Unit
If you are travelling by car, park on the main car park. You will enter the hospital via the main entrance – take the lift opposite W H Smith’s to level 2, when you come out of the lift keep to the corridor on your right and follow until you see signs for COAU, which is also on your right.

On arrival your child will be allocated a cubicle. Food will be provided for your child. There is a room for parents as well as a kitchen for use.

Grane Restaurant
Opening Times: Monday to Sunday: 8am – 10:30am for Breakfast | 11:30am – 10pm for Lunch and Dinner. Payment methods: Debit cards, Credit Cards, Contactless payment – no minimum spend.

Costa Coffee
Located near the hospital main entrance. Opening Times: Monday to Friday: 7am – 7pm Weekends: 9am – 5pm.

WH Smith Newsagent
Located close to the hospital main entrance and offering M&S Food To Go Opening Times: Monday to Friday: 7am – 9pm Weekends: 8am – 6:30pm.

Vending Machines
These are available at the following locations; Main Entrance, Outpatients Department and Urgent Care Centre.
